EVENT SUMMARY: EUROPEAN FREESTYLE ENJOYS A SPELL IN THE LIME LIGHT AFTER BELGIUM’S STEVEN VAN BROECKHOVEN SECURES HIS FIRST EVER WORLD CUP VICTORY ON THE WATERS OF LAKE NEUSIEDLER.

Since it’s inception in 1998, the Surf World Cup has juggled with slalom, super cross and freestyle, but one variable has remained constant over the 13 years of competition history; Lake Neusiedler has always been an anomaly.

EVENT PREVIEW – THE WHITE SANDS OF SOTAVENTO ARE HEATING UP IN PREPARATION FOR THE HIGH-OCTANE SLALOM RACING, AND THE OUTRIGHT FREESTYLE FRENZY THAT ARE ABOUT TO TAKE PLACE AS THE PWA’S STARS FLY INTO FUERTEVENTURA.

Celebrating 25 years of World Cup competition, this year’s Fuerteventura Grand Slam will run from the 23rd of July through to the 2nd of August, with Sotavento’s beautiful beaches playing centre stage to the world’s fastest slalom racers, and the most tricked up freestyle competitors.

July 4th, 2010. After four days of testing conditions in the perfect freestyle playground of Lanzarote, three times world champion Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic, North) and two times world champion Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard, Vandal) raise the silverware at the first stop of the PWA Canaries tour.

Overall Rankings

Men – After two events

Estredo’s excellent performance has enabled him to pinch back his perch at the top of the rankings. Kiri’s consistency sees him jump into second. But, a disastrous result here for Taty Frans sees him drop to 9th. However, if all of the events get a result then a discard will be allowed, which means that Taty could still claw his way back. The king of pop, Steven Van Broeckhoven (F2, Gaastra) slips into third.

With only one event this year, the women’s 2010 PWA freestyle world tour has already drawn to a close. Offringa has made it three in a row, and seems unstoppable at the top. De Brendt has stepped up her game, and with it a place in the rankings. And, Treboux’s super stylish sailing sees her fight her way into third.

Day 5: Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic/North Sails) se ne va da Lanzarote col titolo overall nonostante la risoluta performance di Kiri Thode (Starboard/Gaastra). L’impressionante Sarah Quita Offringa (Starboard/NeilPryde) continua invece a dominare guadagnandosi la corona tra le donne dopo una tardiva rimonta di Junko Nagoshi (Tabou/Simmer Style/Dakine).
